Learn about Wessex Woodwind.
We design and manufacture amazing sounding, attractive and quality woodwind instruments, supplying customers all over the globe.
The beginning
Wessex Tubas was established by experienced British tuba player, Jonathan Hodgetts, in 2010, with the aim of bringing the pleasure of brass music making to the masses.
Discovering untapped potential in the affordability and efficiency of Chinese manufacturing, Jonathan began commissioning his own tubas for creation abroad.
Starting small and with big ideas, after only a year, Wessex Tubas had grown enough for Jonathan to dedicate all of his time to the business and, in 2012, a distribution centre was opened in the USA; responding to increasing demand in the States.
Expanding to woodwind
Having established a successful line of high-quality brass instruments, Jonathan decided it was time to branch out into woodwinds.
This is where instrument technician Peter Dixon comes in.
Having worked together for nearly a decade to ensure top-tier quality across the brass range, Jonathan and Peter decided to join forces once again, this time to bring the same commitment to excellence to the world of woodwinds. Their goal: to develop an accessible, high-quality range of saxophones and other woodwind instruments.
Musical Instrument Technology
With a strong foundation in Musical Instrument Technology from Merton College, where he trained under some of the UK’s leading instrument techs, Pete has dedicated his career to the craft of music and instrument development. He went on to serve in the British Army, where he spent ten years performing on the world stage and maintaining the highest standards of instrument repair for military bands.
After leaving the Army, he brought his expertise to Wessex, where he plays a key role in the development of high-quality, accessible brass and woodwind instruments. His deep technical knowledge, combined with real-world performance experience, ensures that every instrument he works on meets the demands of musicians at every level.
